Summer Lara, OD

Summer Lara, O.D. joined Boulder Eye Surgeons in August 2022 as a pediatric and family optometrist. Dr. Lara earned her Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in biology and minor in biochemistry, from New Mexico State University. She completed her Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry, where she was recognized for excellence in pediatric optometry and specialty contact lens management. 

Upon graduating from optometry school, Dr. Lara earned a coveted residency position at the University of California, Berkeley, where she specialized in pediatric optometry. While at Berkeley, Dr. Lara had the opportunity to treat infants, children and adults with special visual needs including amblyopia, strabismus and binocular vision disorders. Dr. Lara also provided eye health and vision screenings for children in Head Start programs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area in an effort to promote readiness for school and allow the greatest potential for academic success. During her time at UC Berkeley, Dr. Lara presented several academic lectures at the San Francisco and Palo Alto VA Medical Center and co-authored a paper regarding the attachment behavior of children with visual impairment and their caretakers.

Upon completing her residency, Dr. Lara has spent the last decade serving patients of all ages in family practice and specialty pediatric settings in Charlotte, North Carolina and Las Cruces, New Mexico. She is thrilled to join the Boulder Eye Surgeons team and looks forward to serving this incredible community. Her clinical interests include pediatric and family eyecare, specialty contact lens fittings and co-management of cataract and refractive surgery. In her free time, she enjoys practicing and teaching Ashtanga based yoga, snowboarding, canyoneering and spending quality time with her incredible family and friends.
